When I demanded to know what the file meant, Luka’s expression turned remarkably grave. For the first time, the man who had walked down the corridor looking entirely untouchable seemed vigilant, almost protective.
Luka’s jaw tightened. “That’s the wrong question, Emma.”
“Then what’s the right one?”
A cold, suffocating chill swept through my veins. I looked down at my daughter, sleeping peacefully in her swaddle, completely unaware that two men had just radically altered the trajectory of her life within minutes of each other. One had abandoned her to the cold world, while the other had placed his formidable name beside hers like an impenetrable shield.
“Derek’s family is in commercial real estate,” I stammered, my head spinning as I tried to make sense of the nightmare. “They don’t have access to state medical databases… why would they care about my father?”
