Walmart among stores forced to follow controversial new ‘three-for-one’ rule at self-checkout

RETAILERS like Walmart will soon have to follow a strict new self-checkout rule in a US state.

It comes as lawmakers in several areas of the country have been pushing bans and restrictions on the kiosks in 2026.

Self-checkout has been controversial among consumers for years, with some favoring the convenience the technology offers and others preferring traditional lanes with cashier assistance.

Some experts have told The U.S. Sun that self-checkout provides too many advantages for retailers — including lower labor costs.

Unlike brands such as Trader Joe’s, which has been vocal about never introducing self-checkout at its stores, Walmart and other chains have been adjusting their policies to deter theft, reduce inventory loss, and prevent long lines.

In some cases, states like Rhode Island have gotten involved.
