Trump tapped Banks shortly after winning the 2024 election, viewing him as a trusted ally who shared the administration’s aggressive approach to border security and immigration enforcement

He officially became the 27th chief of the Border Patrol after being sworn in on January 22, 2025.

Banks brought decades of law enforcement experience into the position. He joined Border Patrol in 2000 and spent approximately 25 years rising through the agency’s ranks. During that time, he held leadership assignments across Texas, Arizona, and California, including several positions in the Rio Grande Valley sector, one of the busiest and most politically sensitive regions along the southern border.
