Despite the attempt, the officials confirmed that the gun missed the Iranian vessel multiple times. It remains unclear whether those shots were intended as precision strikes or as warning shots designed to deter the approaching vessel. The distinction matters significantly from both a tactical and diplomatic standpoint, and neither official was able to clarify the intent behind the initial rounds fired.
Following the unsuccessful cannon fire, a military helicopter was launched and armed with Hellfire missiles. The helicopter successfully struck the Iranian vessel, hitting it with two of the missiles. The current status of the Iranian ship — and the fate of its crew — remains unknown at this time. U.S. officials have not yet released information about casualties or the condition of the vessel following the strike.
The Vessels Involved
The USS Abraham Lincoln is one of the most powerful aircraft carriers in the United States Navy’s fleet and has been operating in the Arabian Sea as part of ongoing U.S. military operations in the region. Two destroyers — the USS Spruance and the USS Michael Murphy — are currently deployed alongside the Lincoln as part of its carrier strike group. In addition to those two vessels, at least six other guided-missile destroyers were operating in the Arabian Sea as of last week, though it is not yet confirmed which specific vessel fired on the Iranian ship during this week’s incident.
