The Man Who Made the One Big Beautiful Bill Happen Is Leaving — Here’s What He Pulled Off

In that environment, Braid delivered: The One Big Beautiful Bill — the largest tax cut in American history, including no tax on tips, no tax on overtime, doubled child tax credits, and $1,000 Trump Accounts for every newborn American citizen. This was the signature legislative achievement of the administration and the most consequential piece of domestic legislation in years.

Two government shutdown victories over Democrats who spent months engineering traps. The GENIUS Act, establishing America’s first coherent framework for digital asset regulation. Cabinet confirmations at the fastest pace in decades — getting the president’s team in place despite sustained Democratic obstruction. And the defeat of more War Powers resolutions than any previous administration has faced, preserving the president’s operational flexibility during the Iran conflict.

“James Braid had one of the toughest jobs in the entire Administration as White House Legislative Director and delivered for President Trump at every turn,” Vance posted. “He played a critical role in all of the administration’s achievements in Congress: largest tax cut ever, resources to carry out historic deportations… and so much more.”

Speaker Johnson added that Braid “helped House and Senate Republicans advance President Trump’s America First agenda in spite of our razor-thin majorities, and he has played an essential role in delivering historic results for the American people.”

The timing of the departure matters. With the September legislative sprint coming — the SAVE America Act still unresolved, Reconciliation 3.0 to be completed, government funding to be secured before September 30 — whoever replaces Braid will step into the fire immediately. Identifying and confirming a capable successor before the Senate returns from recess should be the administration’s first priority.
