The clip shows Cervantes frantically trying to peel away the gripping discs one by one.
But the relentless octopus refuses to release its hold, forcing the angler to grab a cut bamboo stem and repeatedly bash the creature in a bid to loosen it.
After several tense moments wrestling with the marine monster, he finally manages to tear it from his face.
Cervantes then lowers the octopus back into the water and catches his breath after the exhausting struggle.
He said: “The octopus I caught was very hard to handle. It almost ripped my face.”
The experienced fisherman said encounters like this are surprisingly common.
He added that many octopuses react in the same way after they’ve been caught.
