One year later, on a warm Fourth of July evening, I stood on the renovated wooden porch of the lake house, watching the sun dip below the shimmering water. The tiny American flag fluttered gently in the flowerpot by the front door, just as it always had.
I looked out over the quiet lake, raised my mug slightly toward the golden sky, and smiled into the evening breeze.
“I earned it, Grandpa,” I whispered softly. “Just like you knew I would.”
