Julian bent down slightly, bringing his face closer to mine, his eyes narrowing into cold slits.

“Or maybe she panicked at the airport gate in Rome, realized she couldn’t escape her family’s firm, and selected the first lonely man in economy class who looked desperate enough to play along with her childish farce.”

Elena went completely rigid beside me, her breath catching in her throat.

Over the last twenty years, I had been underestimated by arrogant warehouse supervisors, wealthy cargo clients, shipping executives, and men in clean suits at loading docks from Seattle to Miami.

I had learned very early in life that shouting back at men like Julian only entertained them because it proved they had rattled you.

Absolute, unbothered calm, however, made them deeply nervous.

“You’ve known Elena a long time?” I asked softly, looking him dead in the eye.

“Her entire life,” Julian replied with arrogant confidence. “Our families built Vance Logistics together.”

“And yet,” I said, resting my hand comfortably on Elena’s shoulder, “after knowing you her whole life, she still chose to sit back here with a complete stranger rather than spend ten minutes sitting beside you up in first class.”

The smile vanished from Julian’s face so fast it was as if someone had wiped it away with a rag. His jaw muscle twitched once, hard.

Beside me, Elena let out a tiny, stifled sound that sounded almost like a laugh.

Julian straightened his back, pulling his jacket smooth with a sharp jerk of his hands.

“This little performance ends the second we touch down in Charlotte,” he said, his voice dropping into a harsh, commanding register. “Your mother has already finalized the venue and the press releases for the engagement dinner tonight.”
