“You can’t do this! I built my life here! My clothes, my artwork, my executive files—”
Daniel’s chest heaved as he reached out, trying to grab my wrist to stop me from walking toward the door.
“Rebecca, wait! We can talk about this! We can work out an arrangement!”
“Where are you going?!” he yelled, his voice cracking into a desperate, pathetic pitch.
“To my new apartment,” I said softly. “The one bought with my own money, registered under my own name, where neither your arrogance nor your lies will ever be permitted to enter.”
And as the heavy mahogany door clicked shut behind me, Daniel finally realized that losing his wife was merely the very first domino in a chain reaction that was about to cost him absolutely everything he owned.
