And now, standing in the middle of our living room, he looked at me with the cold, dismissive contempt of a man who believed I was nothing more than an inconvenient piece of worn-out furniture waiting to be dragged to the curb.
Chloe took a graceful step closer to him, her eyes gleaming with cold ambition. “Don’t make a scene, Rebecca. It’s embarrassing for a woman your age.”
I simply stared at them both.
Then, something happened that neither of them anticipated.
I laughed.
It was just one short, quiet, deeply amused laugh that echoed off the high glass walls.
“What on earth is so funny to you?”
“You are, Daniel,” I said softly, stepping forward and placing the document carefully on the glass table between us. “You genuinely are.”
Daniel’s expression shifted, suspicion replacing his arrogance as he frowned at the gold seal on the cover.
I shifted my gaze directly onto Chloe, offering her a faint, polite smile.
“You might want to read it too, Chloe. Since you’re so eager to assume my position.”
