Every single person who had betrayed me had a very specific, assigned place to sit.
It was going to be their public reckoning.
At four o’clock the following afternoon, the grand chapel at the historic mountain resort outside Denver was packed to absolute capacity with three hundred guests, prominent business leaders, and local press.
My father stood beside him, clutching his leather portfolio containing the fraudulent loan documents, offering false, tight smiles to the surrounding guests.
My mother and Sydney sat together in the front pew, both wearing expensive designer dresses, looking tense, pale, and intensely uneasy.
Instead, the bright chapel lights dimmed significantly, and the massive, high-definition projection screens mounted on either side of the altar—screens normally used to display romantic photo slideshows of the couple—flickered to life.
Jason’s face turned an unsightly shade of green as he stared at the screens.
My mother’s voice echoed through the chapel:
“Meline will sign whatever we put in front of her. She always chooses the family.”
“Are you absolutely certain she won’t notice anything when the papers are brought out tomorrow?”
Followed immediately by Sydney’s laughter and her explicit admission regarding her pregnancy and their secret affair behind Terrence’s back.
Gasps of absolute horror filled the room. Guests stood up from their seats, pulling out their phones and filming the screens as press photographers began flashing their cameras continuously.
Jason stumbled backward against the altar, his hands shaking violently as he tried desperately to yell over the audio, but his voice was completely drowned out by the recording.
My father frantically tried to hide his leather portfolio behind his back, but two plainclothes detectives from the State Financial Crimes Division—whom my corporate attorney had personally contacted that morning—stepped out from the side aisle, flashing their badges.
“Richard Vance? Jason Miller?” the lead detective announced cleanly, his voice carrying over the noise. “You are under arrest for attempted commercial bank fraud, identity theft, and corporate conspiracy.”
My mother let out a blood-curdling shriek of pure, public humiliation as officers stepped up to the altar, pulling Jason’s arms behind his back and slapping heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists over his tailored tuxedo.
