Instead, Caleb was crying in the background, and her voice sounded irritated but quieter than usual.
“He wants Grandma,” Rachel said. “I told him we can’t just go over.”
“And?”
“And he asked why.”
“I said Grandma has plans.”
“She did have plans, right?”
Rachel said nothing for a moment.
Then she replied, “I know.”
“You can ask her about another day.”
“I already texted. I’m waiting.”
Rachel called before visiting.
The after-school program handled two afternoons.
