Before Adam could drag her out into the hallway, two floor nurses and a broad-shouldered hospital security guard burst through the door, having heard the shouting from the nursing station.
“I am her mother-in-law!” Marlene shouted, pointing a dramatic finger at me. “This girl is a fraud who deliberately ruined a landmark family occasion!”
The charge nurse took one look at my elevated heart monitor, which was now beeping rapidly in high-pitched alerts, looked at the silver gown dragging on the floor, and turned to the guard.
“You can’t throw me out!” Marlene wailed, her voice echoing down the corridor as the security guard grabbed her elbow and firmly guided her toward the elevators. “Adam! You tell them to let me go! If you walk away from your family today, you are dead to me!”
The heavy door clicked shut, cutting off her screeching voice, leaving the room in a heavy, trembling quiet.
He slowly turned his head, looking at the door, then down at the floor, and finally at me.
“I’m so sorry, Nora,” Adam choked out, his voice cracking. “I am so, so sorry.”
“It’s not your fault, Adam,” I whispered softly.
“Yes, it is,” he said, looking up at me with eyes filled with absolute, unshakeable clarity. “I allowed her to treat you like an intruder for four years because I thought staying quiet kept the peace. But it ends tonight. I swear to you, it ends right now.”
She sent a long, dramatic group text to eighty members of her extended family, claiming that I had suffered a minor, dramatic hysterical episode to force Adam to abandon his sister, and that Adam had physically assaulted her in the hospital room when she came to offer her maternal support.
She truly believed that her social standing, her wealth, and her long history of emotional manipulation would allow her to control the narrative, just as she had done for decades.
