My husband str:uck my mother twice right in front of me and demanded, “Either she leaves tonight or our marriage is over.”

He humiliated her.

He struck her.

Then he tried to force her out of the apartment.

When I explained what we had discovered to Mom later at the hotel, her face went pale.

Then she remembered something she had never told me.

“Sweetie,” she said carefully, “did Brandon ever ask you about the money I received from selling your father’s land?”

My stomach tightened.

“What did he say to you, Mom?”

“He approached me several times. He said he knew some very profitable investment opportunities that could grow the money.”

“How much was he trying to get from you?”

“He never gave me an exact figure. But he kept pressuring me to tell him how much inheritance money I had.”

“And what did you tell him?”

“I told him those savings were strictly for my care when I grew older.”

Claire and I exchanged a long look.

Then Mom added another detail.

“He also said that if I planned to stay in his apartment long-term, it would only be fair if I transferred a large amount of my savings to help with his property expenses.”

A chill ran through me.

Everything finally began fitting together.

Brandon had never been trying to recover $10,500 from my mother.

He had invented the accusation to frighten her.

To shame her.

To make her feel vulnerable and guilty.

And once she felt cornered, he intended to pressure her into surrendering the money she had refused to give him.

Claire looked at me and said exactly what I had begun thinking.

“Brandon never wanted your mother to apologize, Elena. He staged this entire thing because he wanted leverage to force her into giving him everything she had left.”

## PART 3

I didn’t sleep at all that night.

Mom was resting in the small bedroom of the modest two-bedroom apartment we had just managed to rent.

I sat cross-legged on the hardwood floor of the living room, surrounded by cardboard boxes, bank records, printed statements, and legal files.

For the first time in my life, I wasn’t looking at my marriage as a wife trying to save it.

I was looking at it like an investigator studying evidence.

Everything started making sense.
