Everything about him changed.

He pushed open the doors and stepped into the rain without hesitation, his polished shoes splashing into puddles beside the trash bins as if they were nothing.

“Clara,” he said, already shrugging out of his jacket.

He draped it around my shoulders, warm and solid, shielding me from the cold, from the stares, from everything.

“Are you hurt?” he asked softly.

“I’m okay,” I said, though my voice betrayed me.

He looked at the stained dress, the empty plate, the rain-soaked table.

“You’re sitting outside,” he said slowly. “By the trash.”

Behind him, my mother and sister stood frozen, staring as understanding crashed over them like a wave they hadn’t prepared for.

“Sir,” my mother stammered, forcing a smile. “There must be some mistake. Why are you out here with—”

“My wife,” Andrew said, turning calmly. “The woman you chose to seat in the rain.”

My mother’s voice broke. “We didn’t know.”
