“This is Serena,” Mark said, gesturing toward her as if unveiling a prized possession. “She understands balance. She doesn’t complicate things.”

I met Serena’s eyes. There was a flicker there. Quick. Almost invisible. But I noticed it.

“Nice to finally meet you,” she said kindly, which surprised me.

I nodded. “Likewise.”

Mark chuckled. “See? Amelia was always intense. Too invested. Too emotional about everything.”

I didn’t respond. I thought of the nights I stayed up editing proposals for him while he slept. The weekends I canceled plans so he could “focus.” The promotions I turned down because one of us had to be flexible. Love, I had learned, is often invisible until it’s gone—and sometimes even then, only one person ever really saw it.

Serena leaned in slightly. “Mark says you were instrumental early on.”

“Early,” Mark repeated, dismissively. “Everyone’s useful at the beginning.”

The words landed softly, but they landed.

Around the table, partners smiled uneasily. Someone cleared their throat. Wine was poured. Plates were cleared. The conversation shifted, as if nothing sharp had just been said. That was Mark’s real talent—not cruelty, but the ability to move on before anyone could object.
