“For the past three months, both sides have participated in several backchannel meetings and calls,” she said at the time.

“All in good faith. We have agreed to cooperate with each other for the benefit of all people involved in this war.”

Eight Ukrainian children were reunited with relatives when Melania first publicly announced the initiative in October.

Seven more children, six boys and one girl, were returned to their families in Ukraine in December.

Another group of Russian and Ukrainian children was reunited in February before six Ukrainian minors returned from Russia in April.

A seventh child was also due to be brought home as part of that fourth round, according to the White House.

Thursday’s five reunions now extend the program into its fifth successful operation involving the two warring countries.

Ukraine has accused Russia of forcibly taking thousands of Ukrainian children into Russia or Russian-controlled territory since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022.

A United Nations inquiry has concluded that Russian authorities’ deportation and forced transfer of Ukrainian children amounted to crimes against humanity.
