Her smile faltered. “Complicated how?”

He turned to her then, jaw tight. “It’s high-level. Board members. Potential partners. I can’t be distracted all night.”

“Distracted by what?” she asked, though something in her voice already knew.

He hesitated, then shrugged. “By explaining. By looks. By questions. By—” He stopped, frustration spilling over. “By the chair. It draws attention. And not the kind I need right now.”
