Judge Rowan slowly stepped down from the elevated bench, walking down the carpeted stairs until he was standing on the courtroom floor, just feet away from us.
He walked past the defense table, completely ignoring the high-priced attorneys, and knelt down directly on the floor beside me. He reached out, his large, trembling hand gently supporting my back as he helped me pull myself up into a wooden chair.
“Lydia,” Benjamin whispered, his sharp voice cracking with profound, unscripted grief. “What happened to your face? Where have you been for four years?”
“He told me you hated me, Ben. Adrian told me you wanted nothing to do with me after Mom passed away. He said you blocked my number and threatened to take out a restraining order if I ever tried to contact your chambers.”
Benjamin’s jaw clenched so hard a muscle pulsed beneath his skin. He slowly turned his head, his green-gray eyes locking onto Adrian Caldwell with a cold, lethal fury that made the CEO physically step back.
In reality, Benjamin had spent four years searching frantically for me, filing missing-persons reports and hiring private investigators, only to be met with dead ends because Adrian had quietly altered my legal address on state records and placed my phone under a private corporate server.
Benjamin slowly stood up, smoothing his judicial robes, his demeanor shifting into an icy, unshakeable wall of pure legal authority.
