There’s one more element Halperin raised that deserves to be stated directly: the anti-Israel radicalism now coursing through the Democratic base is so intense that Jewish candidates face serious structural disadvantages for the nomination. Sanders survives this test because his anti-Israel positions are sufficiently extreme to satisfy the pro-Hamas wing of the party — at least for now. How long that lasts once he’s the actual frontrunner is an open question.
A party with Bernie Sanders as its frontrunner is a party that has fully embraced what it is. Republicans had better be paying attention — because that base turns out in midterms, and they’re angry.
