Hunter Biden is offering one of his most candid reflections yet on the personal impact his years-long battle with addiction had on his family.

In a new interview, he claimed that the consequences extended well beyond his own life and admitted that his struggles took a significant emotional toll on those closest to him.

In an interview with BBC Newsnight published Friday, Hunter Biden acknowledged that his addiction “of course” made life more difficult for former President Joe Biden and believes it also affected his father’s health.

The interview comes as the Biden family continues to navigate a series of personal and political challenges that have unfolded in recent years. While discussing his recovery, Hunter Biden spoke openly about his relationship with his father and the burden he believes his addiction placed on the former president.

When interviewer Paddy O’Connell asked whether his addiction had changed life for his father, Hunter Biden answered without hesitation.

“Of course I did,” Hunter Biden said.

“That’s what addiction does,” he continued, adding that while some people might avoid asking such a direct question, he believed it was important to answer honestly.

Hunter Biden said the impact of his addiction reached every member of his family, including former first lady Jill Biden, his children, other relatives and those closest to him.

“But, in particular, to my dad, who never let go,” he said.

Hunter Biden explained that throughout his addiction, his father consistently made it clear that he loved him while also refusing to excuse his behavior.

“My dad never let me off the hook,” Hunter Biden said.

At the same time, he said Joe Biden repeatedly assured him that “when I was ready to come back, the door was open.”

Hunter Biden credited that unconditional support with ultimately helping him overcome his addiction.

“That is the singular thing that saved me — that the door was left open,” he said.

He also rejected the common belief that people suffering from addiction must first reach “rock bottom” before they can recover.

“A lot of people always say that you’ve got to let an addict hit rock-bottom,” Hunter Biden said.

He added that, in his experience, many people who reached that point were “either dead or in jail.”

Hunter Biden’s struggles with addiction, including his use of crack cocaine, have been widely documented over the past several years and were discussed extensively in his 2021 memoir, Beautiful Things.

His addiction unfolded during an especially difficult period for the Biden family following the 2015 death of Joe Biden’s eldest son, Beau Biden, who died from brain cancer at the age of 46.

Despite the hardships, Hunter Biden emphasized that his father’s unwavering support never meant there was an absence of accountability.

“Unconditional love doesn’t mean love without consequences,” he said. “It doesn’t mean love without accountability.”

Joe Biden faced his own significant personal challenges after leaving the White House.

He withdrew from the 2024 presidential race on July 21, 2024, following weeks of mounting questions about his age and ability to continue his campaign.

In May 2025, Biden’s office announced that the former president had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer that had spread to his bones.

His office said at the time that the cancer appeared to be hormone-sensitive and that Biden and his family were reviewing treatment options with his physicians.

Hunter Biden did not suggest that his addiction caused his father’s medical condition, but he said he believes the emotional strain of those years weighed heavily on Joe Biden.

“The cost is that it never goes away — that stress,” Hunter Biden said, Newsmax reported.

His remarks provide a deeply personal perspective on the challenges the Biden family faced during his addiction and underscore his belief that his father’s steadfast support, combined with accountability, played a central role in his eventual recovery.
